Zombie Movie of the Week (September 12-18)

The Horde (Yannick Dahan and Benjamin Rocher, 2009) 5 out of 6 Bullets, 4 out of 4 Blood Splats

Finally after many attempts of sifting through the dross zombie movies that accumulate on Netflix I found a fracking gem! The Horde! At first glance and noob user ratings on Netflix (which can never be trusted) it sounds like a B budget, but I assure you it is not! This movie is filled with all types of great zombie scenes perfect for the zombie lovers out there. I should mention that is its subtitled since its French and that the main girl in it is freaking not hot, but once you are past that its truly a great zombie movie! I was considering giving it six out of six bullets but there is one scene in a hallway that includes three dude harassing a girl zombie and they just take it to far for my liking, luckily it only lasts a few minutes. Anywho, the blood is spectacular; very real looking, mostly prop blood and the blood that isn't prop looks great too. The plot is basic, but the action starts right away. One thing I really liked in this movie is that it has a lot of hand to hand combat with zombies, like legitimately fighting for your life with your fists, very cool. My favorite scene is right when the zombie action starts, lets just say it involves a shotgun and a face. And I also have to give a shout-out to the pony tail dude who takes on two zombies with his combat skills, freaking awesome! Enjoy!

Zombie Movie of the Week X2 (August 15-28)

This review is a two for one because they both sucked SO BAD and I missed last week.


Zombie Farm (Ricardo Islas, 2009) 0 out of 6 Bullets, 0 out of 4 Blood Splats

This movie doesn't even deserve a rating pic because it was so bad. Literally there are zero redeeming qualities/justifications to watch it. Not even "B budget" worthy.

Zombies! Zombies! Zombies! (Jason Murphy, 2008) 0 out of 6 Bullets, 0 out of 4 Blood Splats

One of the worst movies I have ever seen. TERRIBLE acting, (not even campy or B Budget) TERRIBLE production value and TERRIBLE EVERYTHING. If you want an excuse to kill yourself, watch this movie.

Zombie Movie of the Week (August 8-14)

Zombie Town (Damon Lemay, 2007) 3 out of 6 Bullets, 2 out of 4 Blood Splats

Ran into this one on Netflix and I have to say it really was not as bad as I thought it would be. The acting was average, not terrible, not Shawshank, but pretty good I have to admit along with some pretty funny dialogue. Story line was also not too terrible, I mean I have def seen way worse. They took a small twist on the zombie theme, even though it was a bit cheesy, it worked out. Besides some pretty terrible soundtracks every once in a while I thought this movie was pretty entertaining. The blood was all prop, which is to be expected from a no name title. Although it was not super gory, it still has some great blood. My favorite scene was near the end, lets just say it involves scaffolding and some serious intestines. Check it out if you are undecided!

Zombie Movie of the Week (August 1-7)

Day of the Dead (Steve Miner, 2008) 4 out of 6 Bullets, 2 out of 4 Blood Splats

I really enjoyed this one. The main girl (Mena Suvari) is totally cute and the co-stars are pretty funny. Lots of one liners from the black guy (Nick Cannon) that are quite classic. Basic zombie premise based in a small town of Colorado called Leadville, which I have actually driven through once. Lots of good action and the makeup is really cool for an under the radar zombie flick. Some blood is CGI and some is prop, the prop looks really cool and most of the CGI looks great, some scenes you can def tell though. Of course there are some cheesy parts (not as many as usual luckily) and some minor twists in the classic zombie outbreak but overall the cheese is low. My favorite part is near the end of the hospital scene, let's just say it involves a crutch, a saw blade and lots of zombie deaths so get stoked! And one more thing, the acting is good enough that a significant other may not be as pissed watching it as they would be watching Dead Alive.

Zombie Movie of the Week (July 25-31)

Dead Alive (Peter Jackson, 1992) 2 out of 6 Bullets, 4 out of 4 Blood Splats

Yes, this movie was in fact directed by the great Peter Jackson, who made one of the best trilogy's ever: The Lord of the Rings. If you are way into zombie movies I am sure you have heard of this movie because of how effing wacky/epic it is. The plot struggles, the cinematography is terrible and the music is not that great either. That being said it is for sure worth watching because it is THE goriest zombie movie you will see. It's not beat strawberry blood or high school CGI either, it is legitimate prop blood! I have definitively seen worse movies plot and acting wise, but this one is so freaking wacky its funny instead of just painful. I highly recommend you watch it. There are so many good kills in this movie it's hard to say which one is the best, let's just say my favorite involves a screaming woman, a punch and a mouth (hint: it's during the mansion scene!) Enjoy! (Oh, and I guarantee your girl/wife/whatever will hate it ha ha)

Zombie Movie of the Week (July 18-24)

Shaun of the Dead (Edgar Wright, 2004) 5 out of 6 Bullets, 2 out of 4 Blood Splats

If you are zombie fan and you have not seen this film you are a total noob. This is one of the most classic of zombie-comedies. Being a huge fan of Simon Pegg does play a little into my bias of loving this movie but it's still great. It's very witty, a little British and definitively funny. To be honest it is not as bloody as I would expect from a zombie comedy but still has some great effects. If you are in the mood to laugh while still enjoying a zombie brain smash or two, this is the perfect film. This movie of course has several funny and gruesome scenes but one in particular is my favorite, lets just say it involves a pole and the word "rubish".

Bo's Top Five Zombie Movies 2011

1. 28 Days Later (Danny Boyle 2002)  6 out of 6 Bullets, 3 out of 4 Blood Splats 

By far one of the best zombie movies ever made. It is very unique in the fact that it is not a typical zombie slasher (which isn't bad) but instead it incorporates creative cinematography with perfect audio tracks. This movie started the 'rage' zombies, which are smarter, faster, and generally always get their kill as opposed to the slow, wandering, feet dragging zombies. This element of rage zombies makes this movie intense and chilling, but also maintains the creative blood splattering slashing that we all love. On top of the fear of zombies, Danny Boyle brings is the break down of human morals for one of the best 3 minute scenes in all of zombie movies. I call it the 'mansion scene', you will know what I'm talking about when you see it, it's near the end and it so so effing cool.

2. 28 Weeks Later (Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, 2007) 6 out of 6 Bullets, 4 out of 4 Blood Splats

This is the sequel to 28 Days Later. Although the directors are different, Juan Carlos maintains the creative cinematography and music that Danny Boyle started. Once again the rage zombies are back, and it's a whole new fight of survival. This movie is just as good as 28 Days Later and has one of the best zombie slaying scenes of all time; lets just say it involves a helicopter and your mind will be blown. 

3. Dawn of the Dead (Zack Snyder, 2004) 5 out of 6 Bullets, 4 out of 4 Blood Splats

This is not a remake of the classic 1978 film, but is in fact a great zombie movie. This movie combines the rage zombies with feet draggers into a terrifying genre of flesh eaters. This movie has the greatest, most realistic blood of all zombie films that I have seen; and the way blood is spilled is in itself very entertaining. This movie is smart and still scary; it will make you want to be in a zombie apocalypse. There are quite a few good scenes in this one, one of my favorites is in the very beginning... Let's just say there is a gas station involved and it comes out of nowhere. Freaking awesome.

4. Planet Terror (Robert Rodriguez, 2007) 5 out of 6 bullets, 3 out of 4 Blood Splats

This movie seemed to be so underrated when it came out because of it's double feature with Death Proof, when in fact it is a freaking awesome star studded film. This movie holds surprises right and left and cracked out twists you only expect from Rodriguez. Plenty of blood and and plenty of booty. It takes the concept of ridiculous and compounds it into the just straight mind blowing. This movie also has several classic scenes but the best one is for sure the human pull-apart, let's just say we all love prop work, look for it in the bbq shop.

5. Zombieland (Ruben Fleischer 2009) 5 out of 6 bullets, 2 out of 4 Blood Splats

I know I know, why 5 out of 6? This movie is hilarious, and has one of my favorite actresses (Emma Stone, so hot right now) but, as a zombie film it lacks just a little. The make-up and zombies look spectacular, which is a bonus, there just was not enough carnage to truly earn 6 bullets. Other than that it's still in the top five movies of all zombie films so quit bitchin! Between laughing the whole time and creating your own list of how to survive a zombie apocalypse, this movie is freaking rad. I am personally not the biggest fan of the main actor (Jesse Eisenberge) but in this film he is very funny and plays the perfect part. My favorite scene would be the entire clip with a surprise guest star, I won't give the surprise away but let's just say it involves fame and a change of underwear from the uncontrollable laugh-shit combo.
